About Riversafe
Thames Water stopped sending email alerts about sewage releases in January 2023 in favour of a new Storm Discharge EDM (Event Duration Monitoring) Map which shows which treatment works are releasing sewage into the water course. This is a useful tool, but it means you have to proactively check to see if there are releases taking place, rather than being notified about them.
At the same time as making the Storm Discharge EDM Map avaiiable, Thames Water also released their Open Data API where EDM data can be accessed programmatically by anyone.
We've built a system that checks the Thames Water API every 30 minutes and sends out email notifications when any upstream sewage releases begin and end so you can make informed decisions about how you use the river.
Our alert system is currently in the beta testing stage, so there may be data inaccuracies or other glitches as we iron out the kinks. It's also hard-coded to only monitor sewage releases upstream of Wolvercote. You'll be able to unsubscribe at any time using the unsubscribe link at the bottom of the alert emails.
